A tradition from afar
In ancient Rome, May was the month dedicated to the goddess Maia, mother of Mercury, associated with fertility and growth. Important festivities were held during this period, such as the Floralia, instituted in 241 B.C. and dedicated to the worship of the goddess Flora, at which ‘people were dressed in robes of various colours, imitating the flowers of the meadows and gardens’.
Getting married in May is still considered an auspicious rite in many cultures, celebrating fertility and prosperity, in harmony with the awakening of nature.
